June: Tips & Tricks from deVivre
In the words of Baz Luhrmann - If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.
The rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
Than my own meandering experience, I will dispense this advice now:
Hire movers. Good ones. Reputable ones. Ones with excellent reviews online. Even better, ones that your friends recommend.
Moving is one of the most stressful events that one goes through in life, alongside the death of a loved one, and divorce. Movers take away majority of that stress.
One of deVivre's first jobs was to transfer a client's goods from one storage facility to another. Since it was an unexpected move, the budget was tight and we had to find a company literally overnight. We received a competitive quote from a company on Craigslist that had fairly good ratings online - some 1s, some 5s. Since it was a fairly simple move, we figured that they would be fine. Boy were we wrong!
The move was going along fine until we arrived at the new storage facility. At that point, the movers basically held our client's belongings hostage. They wanted me to pay them for the move before they even finished! On top of that, they added on random charges - extra travel, fuel surcharge, etc, etc. Since I had the quote in my email, I had substance behind my fighting the charges; however, the "owner" wouldn't speak with me nor his crew. After threatening to call the police, the movers agreed to the rate that was quoted, as long as it was paid at that moment.
Again, the stress of moving should be taken away when you hire movers. After this experience, we vowed to never again hire "a man with a van", even if their bid seems competitive. Trust us, in the end, the "more expensive" moving companies will end up costing you much less!
