Edinburgh, Scotland
One of the few places this British ex-pat could see themselves living in the UK. Edinburgh is a beautiful place that can serve as a great jumping-off point for exploring the wilderness of Scotland but make sure to give yourself enough time to explore this vibrant city.
- One of the nicest things about Edinburgh is how easily you can get the feeling that you're out of the city. One of the quickest and most convenient ways to achieve this is by walking up Arthur's Seat, which is the main peak in a group of hills located in Holyrood park, just east of the city. You get a great view of both the city and Edinburgh castle.
- For some great food and shopping head to Stockbridge Market. It's a haven for little boutiques as well as many charity (thrift) shops so you can always snag some great bargains. Every Sunday year round there's a farmer's market where you can purchase some delicious local food options like smoked salmon and delicious meat pies.
- You could easily spend a week at all of the National Galleries of Scotland, which are held in multiple locations around the city. If I had to pick one, I would recommend the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art which is open every day from 10am-5pm. From the gorgeous vista when arriving through the front gates to the wonderfully curated special exhibitions and the mind blowing permanent collection, this one's in my top 10 museums worlwide for sure!
- Every August for about 4 weeks the whole city becomes a festival of the arts for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Literally every venue and practically every street corner becomes a performance space for "theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children's shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events." Everywhere you look you'll be entertained!
