August: Local Events

WELCOME to our monthly rundown of some of the coolest events happening in NYC! Each month we at devivre Concierge will trawl the interwebs, to bring you some of the more unique and New Yorky goings-on about town. Here are our top picks for August:

Sights:

From Aug 14th-19th, Robert F. Wagner Jr. Park in Battery Park City will see the 35th Annual Battery Dance festival. There will be many outdoor performances by local companies and international dancers from all over the world from 6:30-8:30 each night. There are also morning workshops you can sign up for and the entire event is completely free!

Sounds:

This is really Sights and Sounds, but I had to get this event in somewhere! Bric Arts will be showing The Labyrinth at Prospect Park Bandshell on Aug 10th (gates 6:30p) supported by the Donny McCaslin Group who backed Bowie on his final album Blackstar. Before there were red pills and blue pills there were doors and riddles. If you need reminding, here's a sing-a-long of Magic Dance. This is going to be popular so get there early!

Learn:

The Brooklyn Barge is finally open for business and to celebrate Manhattan Kayak is going to offer free kayaking and stand up paddle boarding lessons to customers. So far the only information on the website is that they will offer:

  • Free 20-minute kayak rentals - Wednesdays, times TBA
  • Free 30-minute Stand Up Paddleboard clinics - Wednesdays. times TBA

Get signed up to the mailing list to make sure you're amongst the first to hear about it when the lessons begin.

Explore:

The Hills are finally open on Governors Island, which offer amazing views of the harbor and Statue of Liberty. They also boast "New York city's longest slide"! I don't know where the other long slides have been hiding, but you can sign me up! There is always some festival going on and you could stumble upon the Brooklyn Music Fest, The Jazz Age Lawn Party or 80s Klezmer Aerobics depending which day you go.

Go ahead! Treat yo'self!
